I sat in a BRZ
today. it was small, compact, no wasted space,...I loved it.
However, for what I use my car for, I would want/need AWD. Winter commuting in Canada is no joke bro.
So. Whats out there in terms of 2 door, small, AWD cars that can be had with a Stick? my mind jumps to the Audi TT, but past that? not much. Golf R and STI are there, but they are 4 doors. a 3/4 series is still a big car.
WHAT IS THERE?!?!

BMW 1 Series but not AWD I just realized. Only 2 series’ come with xDrive

BRZ? Also, come to Vancouver , winter commuting is pretty easy

Need AWD? Psssh
Actually answer would be a BMW 1 or 2 series

Stick with rwd, get good tires. Your smiles per mile will increase greatly

Brx?

A5/S5/RS5 comes to mind. The 3.0T in the 2013+ S5 is supposed to get pretty good MPG too.

Can confirm, my uncle drives a NC with aggressive tires 24/7/365 in Colorado.

MK6 Golf R’s were available as a two-door.
Also, Audi A5 2.0T, though it may be a bit big for what you want.

BRZ with the WRX FA2.0DIT! They did it finally!

close but not quiitttteeee what I had in mind.
Would be fantastic for the winter commute though!

A5 is tempting option, but I still think its a big car. its a A4 with a swooping roofline

if only...

my summer vehic
les are all RWD. and are MUCH
better at wheelies thewn cars are.
Car is only used in Winter or rain. Rain, meh. But winter in canada? why get something bad when I am not really going to use it when i’m supposed to?

Does it really count as a 2 door if yours is built on a Sedan chassis, says 2dr Sedan on registration and the doors are 57" wide?

Audi TT is the smallest I can think of.
Next smallest would be hot hatches like Golf R or Focus Rs(not 2 door).
Unfortunately the 2 series you can’t get manual and AWD I don’t think.

Counterpoint: if both options can get you wherever you need to go, why not go with the more enjoyable, and cheaper to maintain option?
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:07 |

Cadillac Camero a.k.a. ATS?
EDIT: oh wait you said Stick. RWD only for that.
440xi still comes with manual I think. And the M240i xDrive, I think.

2 series?
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:07 |

or a lada niva
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:08 |

The Infiniti G37 and Cadillac ATS were both available as 2 door AWD versions.

Oh, you meant newish?
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:10 |

No stick though.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:10 |

how is RWD cheaper to maintain then AWD?
also, the enjoyable option might not always get me home.
snow storms when I need to use back roads with 2 feet of snow in it, not so fun.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:10 |

yea. anything old around here is rust as of 8 years ago
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:13 |

yea. I MIGHT have to compromise on the stick...
where older 330xi stick?
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:14 |

I think you could get an IS250 AWD stick once. but not in coupe form.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:14 |

Shiftable automatic is as good as a stick
(Don't lynch me pls)
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:16 |

IDK. You could give it a spin and find out.
I two wheel all Summer, FRS in the r ain and winter, in Northern VT. The car is pretty fun in questionable weather, but not as surfire as an AWD. I haven’t gotten stuck yet though.

There’s nothing besides BMWs and Audis made to OP’s spec in the last decade. I’d suggest an Eclipse GSX but I doubt a 25yo rice rocket wi ll make a good commuter car.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:18 |

I;ve gotten our old A3 and our current A3 stuck on more then one occasion (fwd cars) so as its going to be a winter car, the AWD is going to be a make or break. esp one something that low.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:18 |

You know the TT doesn't have a normal quattro system right? It's FWD until the tail loses grip, which is when the rears get power.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:19 |
|
Also, technically a Ford Ranger fits your needs.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:21 |
|
yea, but it still sends the power there if needed.
also, when rear lose grip or fronts?
ranger would be intresting. but I like cars. not trucks. also last ranger I drove left a bad taste in my mouth

Mini Paceman? Relatively recent but doesn’t look like it is around anymore.
Looks like there was a JCW edition as well.

...intresting option, go on.....
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:26 |

not the AWD. I have an IS250 AWD now.....
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:26 |

esp one in the rust belt....ugh.

Dodge Challenger GT AWD is a 2 door, AWD car... It’s not small or stick, but it’s Canadian!
Jaguar F-Type is the perfect winter car. IIRC it’s available in manual.
And there’s the quintessential AWD coupe...
First gen R8s are getting, cheapish , too. If you can find one, GATED MANUAL!
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:27 |

I would DD one of these so god dam hard

well there you go.

Honestly RWD isn’t even bad with a manual, an LSD and dedicated winter tires. The G35 was an absolute peach last winter and didn’t even sweat the trip from Niagara to Pearson in that big snowstorm a week or two before Christmas.

S
ome options for consideration.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:48 |

Not sure, just know that it’s closer to the VW AWD that isn’t 4motion than quattro.
And fair. Audi A5 coupe?
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:48 |
|
but why PURPOSELY buy something thats not suited to the situation that I’m buying it for?
![]() 07/26/2018 at 17:49 |
|
A5 is still big IMO. its closer to what I want. Or a 2 series with a stick and AWD.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 18:24 |
|
I’d go test drive a BRZ and NC hardtop. If you want something sporty, get something sporty. Old TTs drive like Golfs and 1/2/3/4 BMWs are going to drive slightly better than your IS.
Unless you’re buying new WRXs just seem expensive imo, but its probably the most fun “affordable winter” car I’ve been in.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 18:33 |
|
You can survive with RWD though winter in Canada. Just get a good set of winter tires and keep a shovel in the trunk. And if it has a limited slip differential, it should be easy to get through winter.
I grew up with my dad owning RWD cars that didn’t even have LSD or snow tires. Shovel in the trunk and asking people to help push if he got stuck was the solution.
And I’ve driven through almost 30 Canadian winters... and only had FWD or RWD vehicles... with a shovel in the trunk.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 18:39 |
|
yea, I basicly want a nicer, 2 door WRX.
*sigh* why must i want unobtainable things
![]() 07/26/2018 at 18:56 |

Because Audi reliability is still subpar (injector issues, HPFP issues, carbon buildup issues, runner flap issues, timing chain tensioner issues, PCV issues, water pump failures and so many freaking misfire codes on 2.0T SI engines alone) and the TT is pretty much your only option for a manual AWD 2-door small car.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 19:45 |
|
I’ve have nothing but good luck with our audis (the 2 A3s and my cousins A4 and their VWs) so I’m going by my winning streak :D
![]() 07/26/2018 at 20:38 |
|
I think you can get a awd 1 or two series but could be wrong. Also the challenger but that’s probably not what you want.
![]() 07/26/2018 at 21:28 |
|
Surely you mean 265's
![]() 07/26/2018 at 21:37 |

Less parts!
I’ve driven three 1st gen Audi TT’s extensively, all manual. O ne base, one S and one RS. All three were an absolute blast. Pretty comfy too, and you get a lot of compliments from random people. All three were in the shop frequently for a huge assortment of issues... The parts weren’t expensive, but the frequency of needed repairs was definitely high enough that I wouldn’t want to depend on a TT unless I was willing to go through the entire car replacing pretty much everything initially.
I'd love to own one, and if it would work for you I say go for it. They're dirt cheap, even in good shape with service records.

24hrs / 7days a week 365 days a year
Not a tire size. (=

The coupe is only 182" long, same length as a BMW 4 series. But that is 16" longer than a BRZ/FR-S
![]() 07/27/2018 at 10:54 |

wow. my 4 door lexus is shorter (180inch). hole point was to get a shorter car...huh

IS?
![]() 07/27/2018 at 10:56 |

yep.08 IS250 AWD
![]() 07/27/2018 at 11:14 |
|
Nice. I really like the IS platform and have drooled over IS-Fs for a while now, but based on the IS350 I sat in, I’m just too tall for it. I read the IS-F has a lower seat than the normal ones, so I still have a little bit of hope.
![]() 07/27/2018 at 11:17 |
|
its not a bad commuter. but the 250 lacks some spice to it.
but, realistically, if I could:
add 100HP
get a proper handbrake
get 20% better fuel econ
better sound system
it would be a forever car for me.
![]() 07/27/2018 at 11:30 |
|
I find myself looking at the IS350 F-sport, since they’re much easier to find. 306hp in a car that size seems pretty good, but is anemic in the GS.
![]() 07/27/2018 at 15:11 |

I dont think the 350 came in AWD though. so eh for me.

I think it did, but I could be wrong. I have a land cruiser for bad weather duty
